What is Arts Award?

Arts Award is a range of unique qualifications that support anyone aged up to 25 to grow as artists and arts leaders, inspiring them to connect with and take part in the wider arts world through setting personal challenges in an art form of their choice – from fashion to film making, pottery to poetry.

Offered at five different levels, young people get to:

  • discover the enjoyment of participating in any art form
  • develop their creativity and leadership skills
  • learn new skills and share them with others
  • get to work with or experience the work of creative arts professionals
  • gain experience and knowledge to progress into further education and employment

In England Arts Award is managed by Trinity College London in association with Arts Council England working with 10 regional Bridge organisations.

Why is it valuable?

  • Through Arts Award, young people can gain a nationally recognised qualification.
  • It helps develop employability skills such as communication, organisation, planning and team working; as well as building art form knowledge and creativity.
  • It’s flexible and accessible: Arts Award measures individual personal progress, and can be adapted to a range of art forms, activities and timeframes. Evidence can be collected in any format and doesn’t have to be written.
  • Arts Award can add value to students and schools in a number of ways. It can be used to: introduce students to the arts, raise attainment, offer the arts across the curriculum, bridge the gap (both in achievement and between stages of education), and add value to the whole school.

How it works?

Young people create a portfolio to keep a record of their creative journey. Along the way they are supported by an Arts Award adviser, acting as assessor, facilitator and mentor. Advisers can be teachers, freelance arts practitioners, youth workers, members of learning teams and volunteers. They need to have experience of working with young people and access to arts opportunities but don’t necessarily have to be an arts specialist.

How can PHACE support Arts Award in your setting?

  • Advocacy & initial information

We will happily come and meet with you in your setting to give you further information about Arts Award and to discuss the potential benefits to you in getting your young people involved in it. This could include meetings with SLT/governors as appropriate.

  •  Subsidised adviser training opportunities

We will be organising training for would-be Arts Award Advisers over the coming year and offering a limited number of subsidised places to support you to start your Arts Award journey. Once you are an adviser you can go on to deliver Arts Award activity directly in your setting…so it’s worth taking up this opportunity to train at reduced cost!

  • Bespoke advice & support to get your Arts Award programme underway

In addition to your training we can offer you free tailored support to explore the possibilities and opportunities for Arts Award in your setting and to help you map it across existing activities (both in & out of curriculum time). Kick-start Arts Award in your school!

We can also offer a portfolio-check/pre-moderation service to ensure everything is on track.

  • Local adviser network

PHACE will hold a series of informal network events open to all locally-based Arts Award advisers. These will offer opportunities to refresh training, share good practice and resources and to meet others delivering Arts Award in the area.

  • Keep you updated and connected

Being connected to PHACE will ensure that you are kept posted regarding opportunities for your young people to participate in arts activities, attend arts events and find out about arts practitioners and creative & cultural organisations in Peterborough… all things they need to do for their Arts Award. Sign up to our e-newsletter and/or join up as a PHACE member.
